Discover Los Cabos Baja and learn more about the history of Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo 
and the Los Cabos area of Baja. Los Cabos is the municipality which includes the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and located in the state of Baja California Sur. San Jose del Cabo is the count seat of Los Cabos Municipality. A county seat is an administrative center, seat of government, or capital city of a county or civil parish.

A Brief History of Los Cabos 

Many newcomers to Los Cabos confuse the area’s history with its development as a tourist destination, so that the WWII-era pilots and businessmen who built the first hotels and capitalized on the tremendous regional sport-fishing are sometimes lionized as “founding fathers.”

El Arco, in particular, is now as symbolically synonymous with Cabo San Lucas as White Cliffs with Dover or the Rock with Gibraltar. The naturally formed Arch bounded by two immense bodies of water–the Sea of Cortés and Pacific Ocean–is a staple image on postcards and photographs, on souvenir T-shirts, shot glasses, and tequila bottles.

East Cape

While Los Cabos and the beaches that made it famous are enjoyed by many, there are other stretches of idyllic bliss in the Cape region, not far from the explorer’s reach. The East Cape extends from several miles east of San Jose del Cabo along the Sea of Cortez, to north of Punta Pescadero, Los Barriles and Rancho Buena Vista. All are names long popular with fly-in fishing diehards; but perhaps not so familiar to many others.

The rural area at Km. 64 on Mexico 19, only 8 Km. south of Todos Santos in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The village of Pescadero has a pleasant climate, and has been undergoing some changes in the last few years. Art & Beer, Baja Life Camp, Baja Serena RV Park, Casitas The Salitral, Cerritos Beach Club, Los Cerritos Beach, Las Palmas Tropicales, Pescadero Properties, Pescadero Surf Camp, and Playa San Pedro (Las Palmas Beach) are all located in or near Pescadero.

This 2,000 acre master-planned community everything: hotels, marina, golf course and residential neighborhoods. It also has a combination of what nature provided to Los Cabos. Located only five minutes from downtown San Jose del Cabo and twenty minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, Puerto Los Cabos boasts three miles of white sand coastline and is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains in the semi-arid desert of Los Cabos.

With a rich and colorful history dating back to the 1700’s, the laid-back community of San Jose del Cabo offers an abundance of Mexican charm and hospitality with its Spanish colonial character, much different than its livelier sister city of Cabo San Lucas located 25 miles south. Fronting the Mission San José Church is the renovated town plaza complete with gazebo that has retained the atmosphere of days gone by, where people meet and greet, hear strolling musicians and attend many fiestas.

Todos Santos is a coastal palm oasis one hour north of bustling Cabo San Lucas and one hour south of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. It’s a bohemian artists colony that feels at once timeless and avant-garde. This is a place that calls to people and for many different reasons. Some come in search of the México of yesteryear, a throwback to the novels they read growing up.  It is a sanctuary, a quiet place to reflect or retire. It is one of the most charming towns in all of Baja. Todos Santos was officially designated a Pueblo Magico, or Magical Town on June 17, 2006, the official ceremony and appointment from the Tourism Secretary was held on October 23, 2006. The Annual Art Festival is usually held during the first part of February each year.

Tourist Corridor of Los Cabos

Stretching between the sister cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo is the area known as the Los Cabos Tourist Corridor, a 20-mile (32 km) stretch, home of some of the best beaches in Los Cabos, and the world’s most exclusive destination resorts. It is also home to some of the best residential developments in Mexico.
